About Site

This site is dedicated to Shusha, a historical town in the Mountainous (Nagorno-)Karabakh region of Azerbaijan currently under Armenian military control.

Shusha has immence historical, cultural and spiritual importance to the Azeris. Being home to many Azeri intellectuals, poets, writers and especially, musicians, Shusha is considered the cradle of contemporary Azeri culture and music. It is also of high religious and strategic importance to the Armenians, housing the Karabakh Armenian Cathedral and serving (along with Lachin district to the west) as a land link to Armenia.

The present web-site site aims at breaking down with the information gap about Shusha by providing a comprehensive and trustworthy information about the town, its history, architecture, its contribution to the world culture. The intention is to make this web-site an ever-growing online reference source, a virtual encyclopedia about everything related to Shusha and more broadly, the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

Primarily, this web-site will serve as a collection of materials on Shusha, information which is available online and in print, but which is scattered. Therefore, the initial goal is to bring together all this scattered information thus, creating an online web-resource where anyone interested in anything related to Shusha, would find at least some information of interest.

The site creator welcomes contributions and feedback from both Azeri, Armenian and third-party authors/visitors.

Karabakh Horses(Original source: Wikipedia)

Karabakh is a mountain-steppe racing and riding horse. It is named after the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan , part of which is under Armenian military control. The horse was originally developed in this region. These horses are noted for their good tempers and speed. In 2004 a Karabakh horse named Kishmish from Agdam stud in Azerbaijan made a record in speed by running 1000 meters in 1 minute, 9 seconds and 1600 meters in 1 minute, 52 seconds.

Karabakh and Shusha Carpets
Azerbaijan carpets are traditionally divided into four types, so-called "carpet schools", all of which have distinct characteristics. These carpet schools are 1) Guba-Shirvan with manufacturing centers in Guba, Shirvan region and Baku; 2) Ganje-Kazakh, with centers in Ganje town and Kazakh district; 3) Karabakh (with major centers in Shusha, surrounding villages and Jabrayil; and 4) Tabriz with centers in Tabriz and Ardebil in South (Iranian) Azerbaijan.
